The two-day event drew over two hundred TV/Film personalities, Hollywood tastemakers, and media outlets.

Buddha Bark founder, Madison, welcomed actor Eric Roberts and other dog lovers like True Blood’s Kristin Bauer and hubby musician Abri van Straten, feature film star Brandon Molale and Flipping Out’s Jeff Lewis and Jenni Pulos. Catherine Bach of Daisy Duke fame shared the afternoon with daughters Laura and Sophia. Other kids on hand included Joey King who stars as Ramona in 20th Century Fox’s upcoming Ramon & Bezzus.  Academy Award nominee Linda Blair appeared on the KTLA Morning Show on Friday to promote the event and dog adoptions before greeting fans at the event. Nicholle Tom and Hal Sparks connected with sponsors like Chaz Dean as did TV favorites Kate Linder, Lee Reherman, Marisa Ramirez, and Patrika Darbo.  Gossip maven Perez Hilton’s dog Teddy Hilton and various other celebrity dogs enjoyed pampering services from head to paw throughout this wonderful summer weekend event connecting people any their pets.

1.  When selecting a commercial food for your animal companion, make sure the label has an “AAFCO guarantee,” preferably one that references “feeding tests” or “feeding protocols” rather than Nutrient Profiles.

2.  Never buy a food containing “by-product meal” or “meat and bone meal.” These rendered products are the most inexpensive sources of animal protein. The contents and quality of these meals can vary tremendously from batch to batch, and are not a reliable source of nutrition for your animal.

3.  In general, avoid foods that rely on by-products as the sole source of animal protein. By-products consist of organs and parts either not desired, or condemned, for human consumption. An occasional can of by-product-based food may be okay, since, in the wild, carnivores do consume the whole prey including the organs, but these foods are not acceptable as a steady diet.

4.  Look for a named meat or meal (“lamb” or “chicken meal,” for example, instead of the generic term “meat”) as the first ingredient.

5.  Avoid generic or store brands. These may be repackaged rejects from the big manufacturers, and generally contain cheaper – and consequently poorer quality – ingredients.

6.  Unless specifically recommended by your veterinarian, avoid “light,” “senior,” “special formula,” or “hairball formula” foods. These foods may contain acidifying agents, excessive fiber, or inadequate fats that can result in skin, coat and other problems.

7.  In general, select brands promoted to be “natural.”.  Several brands are now preserved with Vitamins C and E instead of chemical preservatives (such as BHA, BHT, ethoxyquin and propyl gallate). While synthetic preservatives may still be present, the amounts will be less.

8.  Check the expiration date to ensure freshness.

9.  When you open a bag of dry food, give it a sniff – if there is any rancid odor at all, return it immediately for an exchange or refund.

10.  Store dry pet food in a sealed non-porous container (a large popcorn tin is ideal) in a cool, dry place. Canned food is best removed from the can and refrigerated in a glass or ceramic container.

Exposing the connection between puppy mills and pet stores, and encouraging adoption.

Right now, millions of adult dogs are suffering on the “production line” in America’s puppy mills. Their sole purpose is to breed and make money for their owners. They live in tiny, wire-bottomed cages, in squalid conditions, with little human contact and often no veterinary care. It is no life for man’s best friend.

Meanwhile, roughly 11,000 animals are euthanized in America’s shelters every day. There’s something wrong with this picture.

The goal of Best Friends’ Puppies Aren’t Products campaign is to create a world of No More Homeless Pets by fighting against puppy mills and irresponsible breeding. Our campaign team saves lives by holding peaceful demonstrations at pet stores that sell puppies from mills, educating consumers about the inhumane conditions in puppy mills, encouraging people to adopt rather than buy pets, and advocating for better legislation to combat puppy mills.

Please join us in working toward a day when all of America’s pets have what they deserve: good care, safety and love from a family of their own.

How is Best Friends fighting puppy mills?

Education: Educating consumers about the horrors of puppy mills increases awareness and decreases the demand for puppy mill puppies. When consumers learn the truth about puppy mills and pet stores that sell them, they make informed choices.

Most dogs sold in pet stores are from puppy mills. In 2008, Best Friends launched its first Puppies Aren’t Products local program in Los Angeles, aimed at stopping the sale of puppies from irresponsible breeders in stores and increasing adoptions. We advocate switching to a humane model, encouraging stores to stop selling pets and to have rescued pets available in the store for adoption. Best Friends targets the issue from multiple angles: We conduct peaceful demonstrations in front of pet stores, investigate puppy suppliers, and work with local governments to clamp down on puppy mills.

As of April 2009, the Puppies Aren’t Products campaign has expanded to include two more cities: Las Vegas and New York. Best Friends holds peaceful demonstrations at one or more stores every weekend in each of the three cities until the targeted store agrees to change to a humane business model, or they decide to close.

Pup My Ride, a lifesaving transport program: Through the Pup My Ride program, over a thousand small dogs facing euthanasia in Los Angeles shelters have been transported to areas where small dogs are in high demand. In 2009, the program is expanding to move cast-off, unwanted breeding dogs from Midwest puppy mills to New York, where they are placed with no-kill rescue groups and shelters to find their forever homes. In the first year alone, an estimated 800 dogs facing certain death in puppy mills will be transported. Education will be a strong component, with every adopter learning about the issue and how the choice to adopt helps stop puppy mills.

Collaboration with others: Best Friends employees work with people around the country to fight puppy mills. Here are some of the ways they do this:

Assisting groups with closing down or prosecuting puppy mills when violations are found

Promoting other groups’ events, protests and petitions through our website

Calling on Best Friends members for help during rescue situations

Helping individuals report suspected illegal puppy mills to the proper local authorities

Helping organizations find proper placement for dogs removed from puppy mill busts

Giving funds to organizations for specific projects or cases.

Never buy a puppy online or in a pet store or from classified ads.

Adopt your next dog or puppy from a shelter or rescue group.

Greens are very important for a dog’s long term health, but this critical component of canine nutrition is neglected by many mainstream veterinarians and commercial food manufacturers.

1.  KALE – Contains a highly absorbable form of calcium essential for healthy bones and teeth.  The dark green leaf is also loaded with beta carotene, lutein and zeaxanthin, which can prevent cataracts later in life.

2. CHARD – Swiss chard is loaded with carotenoid antioxidants.  Chard also contains an ideal balance of potassium and sodium for regulating and animal’s electrolyte balance.

3. COLLARD GREENS – Contain unique nutrients that support immunity and protect against cancer

4. TURNIP GREENS – Among leafy vegetables, turnip greens are on of the best sources of vitamin K, which enables recover from wounds and scratches

5. ROMAINE LETTUCE – An excellent source of vitamin C and beta carotene.  Like many other dark greens, it contains potent anticancer compounds

6. SEAWEEDS – Ocean vegetables like nori, kelp and spirulina make nutritious treats for animals.  Minerals in seaweed can support thyroid function and electrolyte balance.

7. GRASSES - These live nutritious plants can satisfy the cat who constantly nibbles houseplants, or the dog who habitually grazes on pesticide-ridden lawns.

8. SPINACH – One of the few excellent plant based sources of iron.  It also contains calcium, B vitamins, lutein, magnesium, and other important vitamins and minerals.

9. ARUGULA - This delicious salad green is rich in magnesium and potassium, and has a bold, peppery taste that many animals love.
